Description:
Powder days are the best part of winter, and they’re also (mostly) predictable. We’ll talk about how to forecast powder days, how to track snow using radar and satellite, and we’ll also look at some other cool weather that happens in Colorado like Tornadoes and big thunderstorms. Find out about weather so you’re not the only one in the office that didn’t call in sick during that 12
inch day!

Joel Gratz turned his childhood obsession with snow and the 5-day forecast into a career focused on forecasting, enjoying and communicating weather.

Joel received a degree in Meteorology with highest distinction from Penn State in 2003 and a Masters in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado in 2006. Along with this hybrid degree focusing on weather, policy, and decision-making, Joel also completed an MBA from the University of Colorado in 2006.

For the next four years, Joel worked as an analyst for a hurricane and earthquake insurance company. In addition to modeling risk using third-party software and forecasting hurricanes during the summer, he also helped to create the ICAT Damage Estimator – a website that allows the public to estimate future hurricane damage by visualizing the track and damage from
past hurricanes.

After providing local winter forecasts for Colorado as a hobby for two years, Joel left ICAT to work full time on www.coloradopowderforecast.com in the winter of 2010. Now in 2012, Joel is continuing his pursuit of creating more accurate (and more fun!) weather forecasts for outdoor sports. CPF has transformed into www.opensnow.com and is now a national website. Also, www.chanceofweather.com is focused on easy-to-use forecasts specific to sports like mountain biking, climbing, and hiking.

MIT COMMUNITY AUDIT of Engaging Volunteers in Critical Times

DOVA and the MIT Public Service Center are pleased to host Australian volunteer engagement expert Martin J. Cowling from People First-Total Solutions for interactive workshops for volunteer leaders on "Creating a Pro-Volunteer Culture" and "Fundamentals-The Essentials of a Volunteer Program" in MIT's Bush Room (10-105) on Thursday, March 15, 2012.

To increase overall organizational support for volunteerism, the morning session (9am-12noon) on "Creating a Pro-Volunteer Culture" is for broad audiences (volunteer leaders and organizers, executive directors, managers, board members) including leaders at college associations, clubs, and living groups who will learn about and discuss

• The impact and value of a pro-volunteer culture
• Why culture is important to an agency/group
• The elements of an agency/group culture
• What an ideal pro-volunteer is
• Specific actions everyone working with volunteers can take to strengthen pro-volunteer culture at his/her agency/group

So that our volunteer programs function most effectively, "Fundamentals-The Essentials of a Volunteer Program" will be the afternoon session (1-5pm) . Participants take inventory of the specific strengths and weaknesses of their volunteer programs in the context of key characteristics of an effective service enterprise that focuses volunteers on performing critical work, and then they will identify and plan what is needed to improve their situations.
